Caring for Your Banarasi – The Karghaa Care Guide
A Banarasi is not just bought — it is kept. Woven thread by thread on a handloom in Varanasi, your Karghaa piece is made to outlive trends, seasons, and sometimes even generations. Here is how to care for it the way it deserves.
Cleaning
- Dry clean only. Never wash a Banarasi at home — water dulls the zari and can shrink or distort the silk. Choose a dry cleaner experienced with silks and zari work.
- Clean only when truly needed. After most wears, airing the saree in shade for a few hours is enough.
- If something spills, do not rub. Blot gently with a dry, soft cloth and take it to the dry cleaner soon.
Storing
- Wrap in muslin or pure cotton cloth — never in plastic. Silk needs to breathe; plastic traps moisture and can tarnish zari over time.
- Store flat or gently folded in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
- Refold along different lines every 2–3 months so permanent creases never form along the same fold — this is the single most important habit for a long life.
- Keep a few neem leaves or silica pouches in the cupboard to keep insects and moisture away. Avoid naphthalene balls touching the fabric directly.
Wearing
- Perfume and deodorant first, saree after. Spray and let it dry before draping — alcohol can stain silk and dull zari.
- Be mindful of rough jewellery, safety pins, and embellished bags that can pull threads. Pin through the fall or a concealed layer where possible.
- After wearing, let the saree air for a few hours in shade before folding it away — never store it with trapped moisture or fragrance.
Ironing
- Iron on low heat only, always with a thin cotton cloth between the iron and the saree.
- Never iron directly over zari — steam and high heat can blacken it.
If the weave snags
- Never pull a loose thread. Gently ease it to the reverse side, or bring it to us — many small snags can be settled by hand.
Every Karghaa weave carries the small, human signatures of the loom — cared for well, it will carry your memories the same way: for decades, and then into the hands you pass it to.
